Academic Program
AIA is committed to distinctive quality education beginning in the primary grade levels. Strong foundational skills are taught through a variety of excellent curriculum and worthwhile activities and field trips.
AIA believes in academic excellence based upon the students’ individual abilities. We offer a strong academic program with many activities and special interest classes.
Reading - AIA believes that the ability to read effectively is the single most important factor in determining academic success. The 4th-8th grade students are required to read 150 pages per week in addition to their classroom assignments.
Math - The program is centered on the student’s individual abilities and needs. Placement is determined and a course is set for maximum exposure to foundational skills. Tutors are provided for those who excel or need assistance. Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Trigonometry is taught for our advanced students.
English - Students will be required to demonstrate the basic language skills according to their grade level. Mastery of grammar and vocabulary, as well as learning effective writing skills will also be emphasized. Analytical, critical thinking skills, and writing are integrated into all subject areas.
Science - Science is an effective, hands-on approach requiring one or more projects individually and as a group. Chemistry, Physiology, Physics and Earth Sciences are among the areas of study.
Social Studies - Historical and current events are brought to life through study, research and dramatic presentations.
Special focus is placed on cross-cultural, political, economic and religious practices of the international communities. A highlight of the class is brought about by study of and travel to one or more foreign countries each year.
Physical Education - Active participation in P.E. is a requirement for all grade levels. Fitness and activity contribute to overall achievement and responsibility.
Nearby Cactus Aquatic Park is our primary facility for swimming and P.E. classes. Team sports are offered in after school leagues for football, basketball, volleyball, soccer and softball. Student participation is subject to maintaining academic standards. All are encouraged to join.
Spanish - Spanish study at AIA will emphasize conversation as well as grammar skills. There will be four “Spanish Days” during the school year when only Spanish will be spoken.
Bible – The Bible is our textbook for Bible class. Emphasis is placed on learning to develop loving Christian characters through the principles and values found in the daily Bible readings and discussion. We apply those values in active community outreach and service.
Agriculture – The school’s garden is a practical study in God’s creation. All students will take part in the garden experience. Preparing the soil, planting, cultivating, and harvesting their produce offers hands-on education.
Newspaper & Yearbook – Student publications afford the students an avenue to express themselves in a literary environment by using their creativity, writing skills and photography. (Optional)
Computer – Macintosh, PC computers, and internet access is available and required for many research projects and assignments. As our students are on so many levels of ability, tutoring is available as needed.
Auto Mechanics – Students explore the basic mechanics and maintenance of the automobile. (Optional)
Fine Arts – Art and Choir are required courses. We participate in the annual Phoenix Symphony for the Schools Concert program. Drama and Band are optional. Performances are at the discretion of the directors. All musical instruments are welcome.
